Shahi Snan in Nashik

What is Shahi Snan?

Shahi Snan, also known as the Royal Bath, is the most sacred part of the Kumbh Mela. It is the time when the Akharas (sects of Sadhus) take a holy dip in the river Godavari in a grand procession.

It is believed that on these specific auspicious days, the water of the Godavari turns into Amrit (Nectar). Taking a dip during the Shahi Snan is said to cleanse all sins and lead the soul towards Moksha (Salvation).

The Grand Procession

The Shahi Snan starts with a massive procession called the Shobhayatra. Thousands of Sadhus from different Akharas march towards the river on decorated horses, elephants, and palanquins. The atmosphere is filled with the sound of conch shells, drums, and chants of 'Har Har Mahadev'.

Naga Sadhus, with their ash-smeared bodies and tridents, lead the way, followed by the Mahants and common devotees.

Offering water to the Sun God (Surya) while standing in the river is a vital ritual during the Shahi Snan days.

Dana (Charity)

It is traditional to donate clothes, food, or money to the poor and Brahmins after the holy bath to complete the ritual.
